No one could mistake the paintings in Rafael Soriano’s “Cabezas (Heads)” for the work of a Renaissance master. The 21 pictures in the show at the OAS Art Museum of the Americas are clearly the work of a modernist schooled in the hard edges and harsh juxtapositions of cubism. Yet the Cuban artist, who lived from 1920 to 2015, found his way to a sort of classicism.
The later canvases, made as recently as 1996, boast the impeccable finishes, smooth tonal transitions, rich reddish-black backdrops and beguiling luminosity of great oil paintings from 500 years ago.
