'Do Not Resuscitate' tattoo on unconscious patient's chest leaves doctors vexed
Doctors in Miami faced an unusual ethical dilemma when an unconscious, deteriorating patient was brought into the emergency room with the words “Do Not Resuscitate” across his chest.
The 70-year-old man was taken earlier this year to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where doctors made their startling discovery: a chest tattoo that seemed to convey the patient's end-of-life wishes. The word “Not” was underlined, and the tattoo included a signature.
It left the medical team grappling with myriad ethical and legal questions.

Ever wondered what parasites are?
If I ask kids what makes them sick, they usually come up with such things as colds, the stomach flu or strep throat. Although viruses and bacteria cause most infections, there is another group of creatures that can put you on the sidelines: parasites.
A parasite is an organism that lives by “stealing” nutrients from another organism (the host). Parasites are divided into two categories. Ectoparasites live outside the host’s body.
I never considered myself an animal person. Books changed that.
Jan. 12 marks the 25th anniversary of the reintroduction of gray wolves to Yellowstone National Park, a milestone in the history of American conservation that I never would have known about if it weren’t for a novel. I never gave the animals a second thought until my 30s when I read Cormac McCarthy’s “The Crossing.”
My interest in wolves may sound strange, especially to those who know me. When I grew up amid the endless strip malls of suburban Washington, the closest I came to wildlife was a visit to the National Zoo.
